If you have swollen or heavy feet at the end of the day – do not ignore these symptoms and work actively to prevent more serious problems. It may be the onset of circulatory problems that lead to varicose veins, if untreated.

Gels and creams with chestnut extract may be helpful. Active substances obtained from this plant normalise vascular permeability and prevent swelling. Moreover, they increase vascular tension and have anti-inflammatory properties. You may also use ointments and creams containing heparin or hesperidin, that prevent blood from clotting in blood vessels, or diosmin improving vein wall tension. It is worth using supportive products, for example those containing menthol and mint, that provide a relaxing and cooling effect.  Swollen feet are relieved by therapeutic salt baths.

Tired and swollen legs and feet can be also relieved by herbal foot soaks: infuse 5 dcg of dry horsetail in one litre of water and leave for two hours. Then, bring to the boil and simmer for 15 minutes. Strain and add to hot water. Soak your feet for 15-20 minutes, and then dry them carefully and apply a proper cream or gel, using this as an opportunity to give yourself a massage.

During hot days, your swollen ankles and calves may be relieved by an ice massage. Wrap a few ice cubes in a cotton cloth. To enhance the effect, freeze mint infusion instead of water.

Nevertheless, remember that the most effective treatment for your feet are physical activity and exercises – remember about everyday thirty-minute walk, bicycle ride, replacing elevators by stairs – that will do!  If you need to work in a standing or sitting position most of the day, try to change your feet’s position regularly: shift from one foot to another (if standing) or place your feet on the footrest placed under the desk. All this is good for your circulation.
