“Cold hands – hot heart” this is a popular saying – problems with cold feet are experienced by lots of women, especially in winter. Therefore, in October, SheFoot launched a new cream designed for winter foot care which moisturises the skin but also protects it from odour and gives a pleasant warming feeling.

Cold feet may occur when a person is rather tall and slim. It may also be caused by stress and anxiety – the body may then react with circulatory problems and limited blood supply to feet.  Cold feet are also present in people who are very emotional.  In that case it is temporary and resolves once the body calms down.

Blood vessel contraction is promoted by cigarettes; thus, heavy smokers may notice that their feet become colder and less resistant to lower temperatures. Nicotine makes blood vessels shrink. This leads to circulatory problems.  Consequently, smokers’ limbs are more sensitive to temperature changes.

This type of cold feet syndromes is not dangerous for health, and usually does not require any treatment.

How to fight with cold feet?

If cold feet are not caused by any underlying disease, you just need to care more of your feet.  First of all, smokers should say good bye to cigarettes.  If your feet are cooled easily, protect them against cold when going out and well as indoors.  If it gets cold, wear warm shoes with a thick sole, and warm socks made of “breathable” fabric. Avoid walking barefoot on cold floor as well.

Feet that become cold easily should not have any contact with moisture, especially in low temperatures – thus, you need to ensure that they do not excessively sweat in warm shoes. Use warming creams with vitamins and shea butter (e.g. SheFoot warming foot cream) on cold feet every day, a good massage would be useful as well. Your menu should include low-fat “warming” foods, and your allies will be vegetables, fruit and hot spices – ginger, cinnamon, pepper, horseradish.

When cold feet become very annoying, you may try to make your blood vessels more elastic using simple baths. First, soak your feet in cold water, and then immediately put them into hot water, also for 60 minutes. That is to be repeated several times.  Improve your blood flow by regular physical exercises.

The most common reasons of cold feet are:

  • Stress and anxiety
  • Circulatory and respiratory diseases
  • Chilblains
  • Smoking
  • Medications (e.g. some contraceptives)
  • Pressure (e.g. uncomfortable socks or tight shoes)

Keeping your feet for a long time in uncomfortable position (e.g. when working long hours on the computer).
